54. Preserve America Stewards

The Jack Jouett House Historic Site was recently designated as a Preserve America Steward by the national Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The award is in recognition of the Jack Jouett Archaeology Project. The Preserve America Stewards program recognizes organizations and agencies that successfully use volunteers to help care for the nation’s historic heritage. To qualify, a program must provide volunteers with opportunities to contribute in direct and tangible ways to the preservation, protection, and promotion of historic properties, address an otherwise unfilled need in heritage preservation through the use of volunteer efforts, and demonstrate innovative and creative use of volunteer assistance in areas such as youth involvement, volunteer training, public education, and public/private partnerships. The Jack Jouett Archaeology Project, now in its third season, has recruited 97 active volunteers to date, including project director Nicolas Laracuente. The Jack Jouett House is the first site in Kentucky to receive this designation.
