37. Public Archaeology in Kentucky

Mel Harvey asked Gwynn Henderson and I to compile a list of URLs that represent public archaeology projects in the state. Mel said that it was part of her public archaeology state by state tour and this week features Kentucky!

These were the guidelines:

Monday: #NoteworthyPubArch - Did a particular event or program go well? Is there a good website or blog for it? Is there a particular person who is just rocking archaeology outreach in your state/province?

Tuesday: #PubArchInTheNews - Are there news articles from the past year we should feature?  Can you provide the links?

Wednesday: #PubArchEvents - Do you have upcoming events we can help promote? A one-time event, a lecture series, a summer program...

Thursday: #PubArchPress - Has anyone published anything (academic or other research) recently that highlights archaeology in your state? Or any good blogs, print or electronic resources you'd recommend to help others improve their public archaeology and outreach?

Friday: #PubArchFF – It’s “Follow Friday.” What FB pages/groups would you like to promote to our followers? Also Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, etc.

#PubArchConvos - Are there any questions you'd like to ask to engage our followers? Peer-to-peer conversations, inquiry-based questions, etc.

Gwynn and I came up with some interesting things. We also came up with a lot of problems and some questions. For example, Darlene Applegate rocks archaeology outreach. She is one of the core members of the Living Archaeology Steering Committee. She has her fingers in all sorts of projects and they are all awesome. A quick Google Search doesn't reflect this breadth of work. We need more material that lives online pointing to her work like this Day of Archaeology post.

What is the goal of this exercise? I'm not sure. Some of Kentucky's #pubarch is compiled in one list, but it isn't complete. By the end of this year it will be even more obsolete. It may highlight holes in the state's network of public archaeology. It may give us some guidance on how to make it better. I'm not sure. Maybe we should do a paper on it...

In the mean time check out the SAA Public Education Committe's Facebook Page and see what they post.

If you see material that isn't on the list but should be message me and I can add it to the sheet.
